Retail Easy - 5 Reasons Why the Nintendo Wii U will Fail

Yesterday Nintendo gave their E3 2011 presentation, showed us all what had been under wraps as “Project Cafe” and was now being referred to as the Wii U. A funny name for a new console but we thought that about the Wii when it was first revealed. During the presentation Nintendo showed off the “interesting” new controller and HD graphics but will that be enough to pull off another gaming revolution as they did with the Wii? Well here are 5 reasons it won’t.
  1. Firstly the new controller looks like a dinner plate. its sheer size and shape make it look awkward in the hand
  2. The size and technology packed into the controller will undoubtedly make it expensive.  who is going to let their 4 year old child run round the living room swinging it above their head?
  3. Surely the next generation of consoles are going to improve graphically, and if the Wii U is only just delivering HD, it will arguably have the same problem of being a generation behind in terms of graphics.
  4. During the press conference Nintendo were keen to show off some of the third party support they have gained for the Wii U. During the press conference Nintendo were keen to show off some of the third party support they have gained for the Wii U. Third party developers are likely to bring titles such as Batman: Arkham City and Assassins Creed to the Wii U although it’s questionable whether it will be enough, Rockstar and Activision haven’t announced their support, meaning immensely popular franchises such as Grand Theft Auto or Call of Duty may not make it onto the Wii U, which could further alienate hardcore gamers from Nintendo.
  5. We all know Nintendo are ingenious and are unafraid of pushing the boundaries of gaming to evermore advanced levels. However with the Wii U the question does arise over whether Nintendo have gone step too far? After all, repeating the achievement of a revolutionary gaming moment (as they did with the Wii) will be next to impossible.

Rumor: Kinect Tracking Receiving Major Updates

InsideKinect's Glen Says: Despite being an incredibly impressive piece of hardware, Kinect is nothing without its software, and the tracking experienced at launch is certainly not the end of the road in terms of capabilities. There was even disparity between the performance of first party launch software, with Kinect Sports more responsive than Kinect Adventures by about 100ms.

Naturally, we expect developers will have got to grips with Kinect to a greater degree come the unveiling of the second wave of games at E3 next week, and a source at Eurogamer goes into quite some detail about what we can expect from Kinect software improvements for voice and facial recognition as well as full body skeletal tracking.

New Rainbow Six Game to be announced at E3 2011?

It seems like Ubisoft may have been working on the title for some time now, despite the silence the publisher has kept.
This new Rainbow Six is said to be a far more story-driven game than previous iterations. The game will tell a bigger, much more gritty cinematic story than previous versions of the game that is based around stopping a homegrown terrorist group operating in America. These terrorists are fed up with the greed of Wall Street and the government that acts to protect them and decide to target New York City.

Volition to release stand-alone Red Faction Multiplayer experience?

One big difference between Guerilla and Armageddon is that the latter doesn’t feature competitive multiplayer – instead it comes packed with a ‘horde’ like wave based combat mode called ‘Infestation’. So when and why was this decision made to pull out the competitive aspect to Red Faction? Well, I went to find out.

Unannounced Bethesda game being revealed soon?

SystemLink: "I'm pretty much assuming that only one Bethesda title dominates your horizon for the time-being; Skyrim. It's big, bold, brash, brooding, bloody, brilliant, and slightly belated (We've been waiting 5 years for a new Elder Scrolls). However, this narrow-mindedness may all change very soon."

Mass Effect 3 to Feature Kinect Support?

Cover art for the upcoming Bioware action RPG Mass Effect 3 has been found on EA's digital store and, rather surprisingly, it contains the "Better With Kinect" banner found on games which feature Kinect, but don't require it.

Given the source, the image is definitely legitimate but it could of course be a mistake. Bioware has talked in the past about implementing Kinect in Mass Effect 3. "We're not going to do a party game, we're not going to do Dance Dance Krogan for Mass Effect. The reality is it's going to have a really positive impact. Can we create a greater sense of immersion during conversations by using gestures? I think we probably could and I think that's where we'll explore." Bioware boss Greg Zeschuktold GamesIndustry.biz last year.

"There's that impediment of a controller but hardcore gamers are never going to give that up. It might be nice to see a hybrid of a controller used with additional gesture on the side for immersive elements."

Is Sony About to Release An Uncharted Bundle?

Kotaku AU writes: "This has to taken as rumour for now, but an EB employee has anonymously sent us a pic of what seems to be an Uncharted platinum bundle, featuring the first and second game, for AU$69.95.

This morning we simply received the above picture via email, taken from the EB in-store computer catalogue, but after calling EB directly we discovered that the bundle is being released on June 21 – pretty soon, considering we’ve heard absolutely nothing about the bundle to date."

Sony shaving NGP costs: less “investment heavy” than PS3---(PS3, PSP2)

Slashgear writes:
Sony is looking to reduce its initial outlay on the NGP next-gen portable games console, with CFO Masaru Kato telling the WSJ that the new handheld will not be as “investment heavy” as previous hardware as the development budget is pared away. Reports claimed last week that Sony had decided to halve the NGP’s expected memory as well as rely solely on removable storage, in an attempt to bring down the sticker price.

Could E3 be Microsoft's launch pad for Project 'Orapa'?

ZDNET: Maybe the “big reveal” will be Project Orapa. For those who need a quick codename refresher, Orapa is the working name for a combination of Xbox Live and Microsoft’s Mediaroom IPTV. It would give Microsoft a way to turn TV into a service that it could deliver to Xbox customers first, and Windows, Windows Phone and set-top-box customers, later.

Samurai Warriors 3 Empires outed by retail poster

VG247 writes:
Chalk this up under “unlikely to cross the pond in any direction”, but oh! How I should like to get my paws on the newly uncovered Samurai Warriors 3 Empires.
Samurai Warriors 3 was originally released on the Wii, then ported to PS3 with the added subtitle of “Z” and bundled in content from the Xtreme Legends expansion. That version is yet to see Western release, so don’t cross your fingers for this one.

Nintendo’s Next Console May Have Something In Common With the iPhone

Kotaku: We've heard that the touch-screen controllers used in Nintendo's next home console will have a camera. It appears that California-based OmniVision, who among others works with Apple on its iPhones, may be supplying those cameras.
OmniVision specialises in camera solutions for handheld devices, and for a few years has supplied the swish back-facing camera sensors (cameras this small only have a lens and a sensor chip) for Apple's iPhone family.
